ABOUT US

OUR MISSION

Our goal is to apply the Gospel to everyday life. As members of the body of Christ, we seek to put into practice at least three truths about the Gospel: the Incarnation, the Cross, and the Resurrection.

The Incarnation

Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  (Philippians 2:6-8)

“[Jesus] was led by His love for others into the world, to forget Himself in the needs of others, to sacrifice self once for all upon the altar of sympathy. Self-sacrifice brought Christ into the world. And self-sacrifice will lead us, His followers, not away from but into the midst of men. Wherever men suffer, there will we be to comfort. Wherever men strive, there we will be to help. Wherever men fail, there will we be to uplift. Wherever men succeed, there will we be to rejoice. Self-sacrifice means not indifference to our times and our fellows: it means absorption in them. It means forgetfulness of self in others. It means entering into every man’s hopes and fears, longings and despairs…. It means not that we should live one life, but a thousand lives, – binding ourselves to a thousand souls by the filaments of so loving a sympathy that their lives become ours.” (B. B. Warfield)

Through the incarnation Jesus set aside His rights and comfort to break in our lost and dying world. He wept with those who wept and rejoiced with those who rejoiced. In addition to proclaiming the Gospel, He loved the unlovely, fed the hungry, healed the sick, and ministered to the poor. Most of us enjoy comfortable lifestyles. We have nice neighborhoods, good friends, and Western freedoms. Community involvement, mercy ministries, and service consume time and money. The easiest thing to do is nothing. However, the Gospel teaches us that, just as Christ set aside His rights to break into my world, I now seek to do the same for others. To model the principle of the incarnation, members of Suber Road are encouraged to reach out to their neighbors, share the good news of the Gospel, get involved in the community, and extend a hand of friendship to the hurting and lonely. As Christ broke into both the joys and sorrows of this world, it is our privilege to do the same here in Greenville County.

The Cross

…  And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:8)

“Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling” (from “Rock of Ages,” by Augustus M. Toplady)

Self-righteousness is the default of the human heart. It permeated both conservative (Pharisees) and liberal (Sadducees) circles in Bible times. And still today, apart from Christ, every person is seeking to justify himself in the sight of God, whether through moral performance or feelings of superiority. Christianity teaches the opposite. At the cross Jesus paid for our sins. He was punished with the penalty that we deserved. Members of Suber Road live a cross-centered life under the sky of grace. Our good deeds and virtues are no longer ways of manipulating God to do our will or attempts to bribe Him to let us into heaven. Love and virtue now flow out of a heart of thanksgiving for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Moreover, our good works cannot be done with a proud or haughty spirit since we have been saved by grace.

The Resurrection

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

“What reason have they for saying that we cannot rise from the dead? What is more difficult, to be born or to rise again; that what has never been should be, or that what has been should be again? Is it more difficult to come into existence than to return to it?” (Blaise Pascal)

“Be thou comforted, little dog, Thou too in Resurrection shall have a little golden tail.” (Martin Luther)

For the Christian, every word, thought, action, and deed must be informed by this glorious truth: Jesus rose from the dead and will one day make all things new (Revelation 21:5)! There are many ways members of Suber Road strive to put the truth of the resurrection into action. First, we must put off the old and put on the new. Some may suggest that since we are saved by grace we now have incentive to sin (Romans 6:1). May it never be! Resurrection life flows through our soul; righteousness is the only proper response to grace (Romans 6:4). Second, we consider it a privilege to share the message of hope with the lost and dying world. In the midst of suffering and despair, Jesus is the answer. Third, we seek to reflect the new creation in all we say and do. Someday Jesus will come back and renew the fallen creation. In our daily work, relationships, choices of entertainment, and service to others, we seek to reflect this future glory in all we do. Finally, the Scriptures encourage us to meet on the first day of the week to celebrate the Resurrection of the Son of God. We, therefore, place a premium on Sunday worship.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Doctrine of the Scriptures

We believe that the Holy Bible, as originally written, was verbally inspired and the product of Spirit-controlled men, and therefore, is truth without a mixture of error in its matter.  We believe that it is the true center of Christian union and the only infallible rule for all human conduct, creeds, and opinions (2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:19-21) . We use the ESV for all of our pulpit and classroom ministry.

Doctrine of the True God

We believe that there is only one living and true God, infinite in every excellence, and that in the unity of the Godhead there are three personal distinctions – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – yet one in substance and equal in every divine perfection (Exodus 20:2-3; I Corinthians 8:6; I John 5:7). We believe in the absolute deity of the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ; that He was divine as no other man can be, being very God of very God, existing from all eternity coequal with the Father and the Spirit; that He never ceased to be God for one instant and that His humiliation did not consist in laying aside his deity; that as man He was miraculously begotten of the Holy Ghost and born of the virgin Mary (John 1:1-2; I John 5:20; Matthew 1:20; Luke 1:26-38). We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine person, equal with the Father and Son and of the same substance and nature. He convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment; bears witness to the truth; is the agent of the new birth; and seals, endues, guides, teaches, witnesses to, sanctifies, and helps the believer, indwelling every true child of God (II Corinthians 13:14; John 14:16-17; Romans 8:14-27).

Doctrine of the Devil
We believe in the distinct personality of Satan, that he is the unholy god of this age, author of all powers of darkness and sin, and is destined to the judgment of an eternal justice in the lake of fire (Matthew 4:1-3; II Corinthians 4:4; Revelation 20:10).
Doctrine of the Creation

We believe that God created the heavens and the earth, including all life, “each after its own kind,” by direct act, and not by the process of evolution (Genesis 1-2; Colossians 1:16-17; John 1:3).

Doctrine of the Fall of Man

We believe that man, in the person of the first Adam, was created in innocence but by voluntary transgression fell into sin, thus plunging the whole race into condemnation and death, so that now all mankind is born in sin and shaped in iniquity, and all become willful sinners with the first expression of personal choice, and so are without excuse before God (Genesis 3; Romans 5:10-19).

Doctrine of the Redemption from Sin
We believe that the only escape from the condemnation of sin is through the redemption wrought by Jesus Christ, when He voluntarily took upon Him a human body and nature, yet without sin, and by His suffering, death, and resurrection made full satisfaction to the justice of God for the sin of man; that the blessings of this salvation are given on the grounds of grace to all who believe and confess and that it is the immediate duty of all to accept these offers of mercy (John 1:1-3, 14; John 3:1-7; Hebrews 10:4-14; Acts 16:30-33).
Doctrine of Salvation by Grace

We believe that faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ is the only condition of salvation from sin and this salvation is wholly by grace; that no works, however good, make the salvation more secure (Acts 16:31; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5-7; Romans 10:9-13). We believe that all who take Christ as their Savior are born from above and are eternally secure in Christ (John 10:28-29; Romans 8:35-39; Philippians 1:6).

Doctrine of the Church

We believe that the Church universal is a New Testament institution; unknown to the Old Testament prophets; established by Jesus Christ, Who is the sole Head; revealed through the holy apostles; empowered and perpetuated by the Holy Spirit; Christ’s “body” for service and his “bride” for glory.  It began with the New Testament saints and will be consummated at the coming of Christ in the Rapture (Matthew 16:18; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:1-13, 41-47; Acts 15:14; Romans 16:26; I Corinthians 12:12-18; Ephesians 1:22-24; Ephesians 3:21; Ephesians 5:23-33; I Thessalonians 4:13-18). We believe that the Church universal is manifested through the local church, which is a congregation of immersed believers, associated by covenant of faith and fellowship of the Gospel; observing the ordinances of Christ; governed by His laws; exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in by His Word; that its officers are pastors and deacons; that it has the absolute right of self-government directed by the Holy Spirit and it is answerable only to Christ, and that in all matters of membership, policy, government, discipline, and benevolence the will of the local church is final (Matthew 18:15-17; I Corinthians 1:2; I Corinthians 6:4-5; I Corinthians 7:17; I Corinthians 11:16; I Timothy 3:1-15).

Doctrine of the Ordinances

We believe that there are two church ordinances:  Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.  Baptism is the immersion of a believer in water and is properly called “Believer’s Baptism.”  It sets forth in a beautiful and solemn way our faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior, which pictures the effects of that faith in our lives as it produces death to sin and resurrection to a new life.  Baptism is a prerequisite to the privileges of church relation.  The Lord’s Supper is the commemoration of our Lord’s death until He comes and our continual fellowship with Him.  It should be preceded by baptism and always by careful self-examination (Acts: 8:36-39; Romans 6:3-5; I Corinthians 11:23-32).

Doctrine of the Righteous and Wicked

We believe that there is a radical and essential difference between the righteous and the wicked; that only those who through faith are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and sanctified by the Spirit of God are truly righteous in God’s esteem; that all who continue in impenitence and unbelief are in His sight wicked, and under the curse; and that this distinction holds among men both during life and after death, in the everlasting conscious felicity of the saved and the everlasting conscious suffering of the lost (Malachi 3:18; Romans 6:17-23; Matthew 25:34-41; Luke 6:25; John 8:21).

Doctrine of the Return of Christ

We believe in the bodily, personal, pre-millennial return of Jesus Christ; that He will come before the seven-year tribulation period to catch away His church, coming only into the air; and that He will come with His church at the close of the tribulation to judge the living nations and to set up His kingdom on earth (I Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matthew 25:31-46; Revelation 19:11-21).

Doctrine of the Resurrection
We believe in the resurrection of the bodies of the dead; that believers who sleep in Jesus will be raised at the coming of Christ for His church and caught up with the transformed living saints to meet the Lord in the air; and that the wicked dead will be raised at the close of the millennial kingdom and stand in their bodies at the Great White Throne of judgment to receive their final doom (John 5:21-30; I Thessalonians 4:16; Revelation 7:9-17; Revelation 20:11-15).
